What's the difference between polystyrene and styrene?

CAS 100-42-5 Styrene, also known as ethenylbenzene or vinylbenzene, is an organic compound and a derivative of benzene. It is a colourless oily liquid that is extensively used to make polystyrene plastics, fibreglass, synthetic rubber, and latex.

Polystyrene (PS) is an inert plastic and polymer made of fused styrene molecules. It appears as a hard, transparent and glassy polymer with broad applications for a variety of consumer products and commercial uses.

Characteristic Styrene Polystyrene (PS)
Chemical Form Monomer. Chemical formula: C₈H₈. Polymer. Formed by polymerizing styrene monomers.
Physical State Colorless, volatile liquid  Solid plastic
Toxicity Volatile and flammable.  Inert solid. Safe.
Primary Use Used as a raw material (feedstock) to manufacture polystyrene and other plastics. Used directly in products: disposable cutlery, packaging foam, electronic housings, toys.
