Is styrene the same as acrylic?

2025 10/27

CAS 100-42-5 Styrene is not the same as acrylic, although they are both types of plastic with similar uses.

Styrene is a monomer used to create plastics like polystyrene (a hard, brittle plastic) and ABS (a tough, impact-resistant plastic).

Acrylic monomers are used to produce acrylic polymers, typically refers to polymers of methyl methacrylate (PMMA). It is known for its exceptional clarity, transparency, and weatherability.

Characteristic Styrene (Polystyrene, PS) Acrylic (Polymethyl Methacrylate, PMMA)
Chemical Composition Polymer of styrene monomer (C₈H₈) Polymer of methyl methacrylate monomer (C₅H₈O₂)
